2012 Alceno Premium 50 Barricas Red Blend
Here’s another great value Spanish bottle that is only $11.99 at Costco. This one is a bit different of a blend than many of the other high value Spanish wines I’ve been writing about lately.
This wine is 85{45b0463633054486b24ea7f1d8a3d5c23c88cedad61f649c1174e653e8a53946} Syrah and 15{45b0463633054486b24ea7f1d8a3d5c23c88cedad61f649c1174e653e8a53946} Monastrell. If you like Syrah with some character, this is the wine for you. The Monastrell brings a little tannic bite to the finish, kind of like the difference between mild and sharp cheddar. In small doses like this the grape can really take a good wine to the next level, and that’s exactly what I think happens here.
Lots of herbal scents on the nose with spice; then juicy flavors of blueberry, blackberry surrounded by more herbal notes; leads into a deep long finish that is really remarkable for a wine priced this low. Tastes like blueberry pie with bite. A nice wine.
