2019 Castelli del Grevepesa Clemente VII Settimo Rosso di Toscana
This was a new find for us at Costco, a Tuscan blend from 2019 for $14.99 that looked interesting and worth a taste.
Retail price on this bottle is around $20-$25 so we like Costco’s price a lot. Also a 92 point callout from Wine Advocate.
We couldn’t determine the exact varietal makeup after poking around online, but it looks like previous vintages of this wine are mostly Sangiovese with smaller parts Merlot and Syrah; this vintage is likely similar.
The wine is a medium ruby in the glass, cherries and wood on nose; more cherry, wild berry flavor and plum in the mouth with good acidity; medium plus in body; earthy and oaky into the finish.
We thought this was a good wine, but not great among sub $20 Super Tuscans. A touch too much wood for our tastes that masked some of the flavor that we prefer shine through.
If you’re looking for something similar to this bottle, and don’t mind spending just a few more bucks, we’d highly recommend checking out this Rosso di Montalcino.
