2019 La Sousto Chateauneuf-du-Pape | CostcoWineBlog.com
Ok, Chateauneuf-du-Pape time; always a favorite of ours. Costco generally does a good job bringing in reasonably priced Chateauneufs that are nice quality, including the Kirkland one of course that is only $20.
This is a new one we had yet to find and taste. Costco’s price was $34.99, and it looks like the retail average according to Wine Searcher is $43.
We also see a glowing 94 point score from Wine Advocate, and while we generally fall close to them in many of our ratings, we felt that was a bit much. This is a very nice wine, just maybe not 94 point good. At least in our opinion.
The blend, according to one outlet we found online, is 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 8% Mourvedre, 1% Cinsault and 1% Vaccarese.
In the glass the wine pours a deep ruby with dried fruit, flowers and perfume on nose; it’s earthy throughout with a medium body; flavors of cherry, blackberry, plum, anise; super dry and chalky in the finish.
A nice offering no doubt, landing right at 90 points for us. That puts this a couple notches below the Kirkland CDP, where we rated the last vintage 93 points. Keep an eye out for that one if it’s still around. (or use this new feature to search)
