Oregon’s King Estate: Biodynamic King of North America
Founded in 1991 by Ed King, the King Estate is today the largest certified biodynamic vineyard in North America. With the recent purchase of the Pfeiffer Vineyard, it now has 535 acres of estate vineyards in the Willamette Valley southwest of Eugene, Oregon, 465 acres of which are Demeter certified biodynamic. In addition King Estate purchases fruit from about 50 growers in Oregon and Washington State. It’s a large operation, working with 25+ grape varieties and producing 50-60 different wines. Brent Stone, a graduate of the Washington State University wine program, is the lead winemaker and co-CEO; Barrett Rosteck is associate winemaker, and Matt Danner and Leah Lyon are assistant winemakers. Vineyard manager Melitón Martínez oversees the estate’s biodynamic vineyard. The King Estate is actively trying to reduce its carbon footprint by managing its supply chain, reducing bottle weight, and other proactive measures. Below we review several of the winery’s widely distributed wines.
