Vinography Images: Heroic Bubbles : Vinography

Heroic viticulture is a term that occasionally gets thrown around amongst us winewriters and various wine producers. Like many things in the over-romanticized world of wine, it probably gets overused. But there are vineyards throughout the world that immediately and absolutely justify the use of this phrase, such as these from the Rive Farro di Soligo in the Prosecco Superiore Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG region of northeastern Italy.

Unbelievably steep slopes, contoured with the unwalled grassy terraces known as ciglioni, have to be worked very carefully by hand, and occasionally with small tractors. The inclines of these slopes are no joke. Injury and death during harvest are a tragic occasional reality. Locals estimate that it takes four to six times as many hours to work an acre on these slopes as it does on the flatland. All of this makes you wonder how on earth Prosecco, even the best of it, can still be under $25?
