Patriarch, Grandfather, and Current Owner
Giovanni Zullo
Giovanni Zullo successfully established the 395-acre (160-hectare) winery, in 1937, for his family. The focus became producing organic wines, during 1987, early in the evolution of organic winemaking, actually.
The winery is over 395 acres (160 hectares), successfully initiated by grandfather and current owner Giovanni Zullo. The viticulture planting technique uses a method called ‘set over.’ This involves setting vines over the top of the trellis wires, generally allowing the canopy to grow upward. Consequently, Italian Agronomos (enologists) called this style of grape growing a “set over,” and what Tenuta Viglione believes is best for their terroir.
Tenuta Viglione Winery And Vineyards
Wine is third generational at the Tenuta Estate, in the heart of Murgia. Their winery encompasses the essence of Italian culture, history, and identity, all in all. I have become immersed with this important family, while delving into their details, of their region, winemakers, and grape varieties. It is just so easy to do, because it’s a charming story.
Located in the Gioia del Colle PDO, Tenuta can be found on the Murge karst plateau in the center of Puglia. Neanderthals and Homo sapiens coexisted for thousands of years in an extremely unique area, initially known as the Murge karst plateau. This is another reason why this region is perfect for grape growing, as much as for its winemaking history, with Giovanni Zullo.
Vines established in their vineyards are at an average altitude of 1307.36 feet (400 meters) above sea level. Their wines have a distinctive acidity, due to thermic fluctuations between day and night. As a result, the clayey-calcareous soil and hilly terrain of the Plateau contribute to typical minerality in wines produced there.
Ancient History Is Still Present
Their wines exhibit distinctive acidity, significantly as a result of significant fluctuations in temperature between day and night. The clayey-calcareous soil and hilly terrain contribute to the wines’ characteristic minerality, merge on the Murge Plateau. Calcareous soils are known for influencing the acidity and flavor profile of wines and their high calcium carbonate content. Accordingly, clay content also ensures a steady supply for vine health.
Puglia Region
Puglia has long been an Italian vacation favorite, significantly, at last during the warmer months. And, Puglia is also known for producing unparalleled olive oils, a sector that has experienced a significant boom in recent years. The estate features gardens with traditional herbs, seasonal vegetables, and citrus trees, at the present time, flourishing alongside old-growth olive trees.
Wine production is based on fundamental concepts at Tenuta Viglione’s, respect for environment linked with native Puglia’s regional vines. The winery vinifies grape varieties, with only one exception that has been growing there for centuries.
Tenuta Viglione’s winemaking approach has garnered recognition through awards and certifications, undeniably speaking to their dedication to quality. They believe there is a good reason: if nature didn’t want a Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon to originate there, they would have! And, we’re still talking organic!
The Tenuta wines remain a relatively unknown region on a global level in Puglia, despite its profile rapidly rising. That is about to change, beginning with their outreach. We seasoned wine writers have many more great stories,to write, due to their quality being really impressive.
Tenuta Viglione‘s Portfolio
Another example is Verdeca, explicitly a white wine with a signature freshness and its minerality is altogether enjoyable. The Verdeca is a bright straw color, generally, with characteristically herbaceous and fragrant, aromas of citrus and peach. Alternatively, Nero di Troia is a ruby-red color, with rich, spicy aromas of blackberry and cherry, and elegant fulfilling tannins.
Primitivo, Negroamaro, Susumaniello are Tenuta Viglione’s flagship wines. There are also lesser-known varieties, such as Verdeca, Nero di Troia, and Verdeca are also well known there.
Expansion Is Their Next Horizon
Tenuta Viglione is actively working to expand their presence in the American market, also being a delicious option. This is a smart move, because it allows them to share their unique approach to winemaking with a wider audience.
This winery want to bringing their holistic winemaking to restaurants, hotels, and wine stores, eventually reaching more customers, like you! Exciting times are ahead for Tenuta. Many people will be eager to try their wines, as son as they become more widely available.
The area is a Who’s Who for celebrities. You might recognize the Beckham family, Madonna, George Clooney, and Justin Timberlake. Dame Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep have been known to visit, owning country homes in this picturesque region. Tucci visited the Pugliese capital Bari, during his recent CNN / BBC series “Searching for Italy.” I have to go back and watch with much more renewed interest.
In June, the G7 summit was proudly hosted at sumptuous Borgo Egnazia resort, just outside the picturesque town of Fasano. Wouldn’t it be absolutely enchanting to brush shoulders and explore this remarkable area?
